So at work, the question of why Frodo didn't just ride an eagle to Mount Doom came up. I had an epiphany: it's because Gandalf made the plan and Gandalf is obsessed with hobbits. Using an eagle to solve his problems just never crossed his mind.

That revelation led to this flow chart:

Thanks. I wanted to make a prettier version, but everyone kept saying they liked the chaotic craziness of this rev, so it stuck. Apparently it better represents Gandalf's erratic thought patterns.

Ha! That is excellent. You can also list all the problems he sees in The Hobbit and replace Hobbit with Dwarf.

Isn't most of that book him convincing the dwarfs to make more use of their hobbit?

Gandalf even uses hobbits as scapegoats for bad ideas.

Going into Moria? Know it's gonna be shit and someone will die? Know that there really is not alternative?

"Let the ringbearer decide."

Yeah, that's completely true. Gandalf didn't trust the Dwarves to make it through the mission without disaster, so obviously he had to convince a hobbit to babysit them.
