Almost finished the game, but I've a few things that seem kind of strange when traveling through the Gate of Time and doing stuff there, then returning to the future. Here are a few of them I'm confused about:

1. Planting the seedling in the past, and then returning to the present and Groose is standing there like it's always been there.
2. When Ghirahim kidnaps Zelda near the end, does that mean their's a second Zelda still behind the doors sleeping to hold the seal?

Would somebody be able to explain them to me?

It's time travel. It WAS always there. It was always there because Link put it there.

2. Yes. Technically. But they can't interact.

So Groose only acts like it was there when Present Link goes back to plant it? I'm confuzzled.

The act of Link going back in time to plant the seed changes the course of history. Groose acts like it was there the whole time because the very act of going back into the past and altering that one detail means, yes, it was there the entire time.

In fact, if you go back in time to when you were first playing through the game, you'll note the tree is now there right from the beginning.

Here's what I'm confused about.

If I'm playing in Hero Mode, and the game is smart enough to recognize this fact and remind me of it every five minutes, why is the game still holding my hand and trying to explain everything to me?

Yesterday I started a new file and played up until the part you reach the Sealed Grounds first. Impa still has the bracelet, and Zelda is sleeping behind the big cracked doors.


So if all these things have already 'happened', how come it's not the same with the tree?

I assume it's because the tree is something you actually have to do yourself to advance the game. Zelda's bracelet is out of your control.

The tree should be there. It's rare proper time travel shows up in stuff like this. Chalk it down to Nintendo using the Star Trek methods of time.

Bill and Ted is still the best representation.

It ought to have been done the same way as the Well in OoT. You already drained it and taught the windmill owner the storm of storms before you actually do it.

The tree should already be there and Impa has you go back and plant it because that's what has to happen, otherwise it wouldn't be there in the present meaning you never did plant it meaning oh no I've gone cross-eyed

I figured they left the tree out because figuring out where to plant it is part of the puzzle. I saw those holes all over the place in the game, including a few in the pumpkin patches in Skyloft. I didn't try planting the sapling in any of the others because it was obvious where it was supposed to go (though when I get to that point in my replay I think I will try putting it in other places just to see what happens), so I guess it wasn't a very GOOD puzzle, lol..

Damn tree confusion. Would've been so much easier if Link had just brought Groose back into the past with him when planting the tree to avoid this kind of paradox.

It's Zelda. You expected them to avoid time travel paradoxes? Consider Ocarina of Time - time travel is so messed up there, that you can open a chest in the future and then go back to the past and find it open!

What Link should do:

"Wait a minute, time travel? Behind this rock should be the Hylian Shield because in the future I'll do the boss gauntlet, get the shield and bring it back to the past for my present self to use."

You got the Hylian Shield from behind a rock! Just remember to gain one for reals sometime in the future.

And yeah, MM's time travel was completely crazy-go-nuts. Kudos to Termina's Goddess of Time.
