So, the timeline has been explicated and something long believed by some fans has been confirmed: Link returns to the past before Ganon's attack on the castle, shows the mark of the gods on his hand, and thus gets Ganondorf executed in the Arbiter's Grounds. He runs off to Termina and has adventures there, saves that world, and everything is happy. Right?
Except what happened to the original Link of that timeline? The one who met Zelda long before the Door of Time was opened? Was he still back in the forest with the duplicate Navi too? Out fighting King Dodongo or giving Jabu Jabu a colonoscopy? And if the Hero of Time appeared in his timeline, then what would happen when he died and the cycle now has two souls of the Hero to deal with.
Perhaps that's why the Child Timeline and it alone has The Hero's Shade.

OOT Time Travel still works mentally, so there's no duplicate. OOT Link is apparently just disappointed that he never got to be a hero in the same scope as in the Adult Timeline.

He ceases to exist in that timeline due to time paradox. Or what MPS said.

Probably some spatial displacement thingy. Time travel in OoT was mental so there's no duplicates (otherwise where would the body Link's mind return to come from). Young Link's body just get snatched from where-ever in Hyrule he is at the moment and planted in the Temple of Time. In my mind, Link's mind is planted in the body of the young Link from a ime before his first meeting with Zelda. It would be like Link wakes up like he does at the start of the game or he's just about to leave Kokiri Woods for the first time when suddenly he vanishes and reappears in the Temple of Time, with totally different memories.
