So I have a geography question on my lab homework, and I can't figure it out.
I'm thinking this is a piece of cake, I'm just being a derp.

This is it:
"If you start at the equator and travel to 10 degrees latitude, approximately how many kilometers (or miles) north of the equator will you be? Take the circumference of the Earth to be 40,000 kilometers (24,900 miles)."

If anyone can help me that would be fantastic.
<3

And there's something about 1 degree equals 60 seconds and 60 seconds equals a minute. I don't know how the heck that's supposed to help me.

Let's see here.

10 degrees is 1/36th of a full circle (360 degrees) so you have traveled 1/36th of the Earth's circumference. 40,000/ 36 = 1,111 KM. About 1,100, to put this in sig figs.

This is actually more of a math question. Just use the formula: distance = (radius)*(angle)

Of course the angle has to be in degrees. So 10 deg = pi/180*10 = pi/18 = 0.174. Now just use the radius of the earth, which is 6378 km. So distance = 6378*0.174 = 1109 km. There you go!
