I got a computer tablet a few months ago because it became harder to find a place where I can draw on paper. All that I done so far is go over drawings I scanned in while trying to make improvements.



I'm probably doing it wrong. I spent over a month drawing that, which is longer than it takes for me to do a painting, and I know the drawing is terrible.

What kind of tablet did you get? I tried finding my pen the other day for my wacom and it is MIA D:

I got a Wacom Bamboo Pen tablet.

I thought I got all of the proportions wrong.

I reduced the size when I uploaded it, which I think disguises some of how bad I drew the lines. At the moment it's at 25% but when I was drawing I had it zoomed in by 200% and sometimes 400%, and when I tried to draw a line it ended looking wobbly. Most of the time I spent drawing a line, then erasing it and trying again.

Do you get pen pressure with the Bamboo tablet? I think your drawing would benefit a lot with more line variation.

The tablet does have pen pressure, but it does caused problems as I had to push as hard as I can and draw slowly to get anything to appear.

That's odd. Have you tried messing with the settings to see if you can get it to perform better?

The crease in the elbow on the right looks a bit awkward, and I think it would benefit from texturing so that it is more than lineart, but those are nitpicks. The proportions are good, and the finer elements of the character's clothing, along with the background imagery, provide nice detail without overcomplicating the picture as a whole. Good work. It may have taken you a while to draw, but it can take a while to get used to a drawing tablet. Just keep practicing with it.

And like what has been said above, there should be a setting somewhere in your computer that can determine the sensitivity of the tablet pen, something you can adjust so that marks are easier to make.

If I had to pic one thing to critique ya on it would be the left arm...it seems a bit posed and stiff... other then that I can't wait to see it colored

When I bought the tablet I also bought two books with it. One of them was on digital painting, but I don't think I'm good enough to try it.

You're not magically 'good enough' to make art, dude. You have to practice, and practice requires....you know....trying it. A lot.

There's one thing my profs have been telling me the whole time I've been in school, and I'm STILL trying to get it through my head, it's that it's okay to make bad art. You kinda have to, it's a part of every artist's journey, 'cause like I said no one's going to wake up one morning and magically be the next Caravaggio. You can only improve if you keep working at it.

I found this quote the other day I thought was pretty awesome, "Don't be afraid to make a mistake. We all have 10,000 bad drawings in us so the sooner you get them out the better."

That's the problem. I can't practice. One of the things all the books that I have on drawing mention is the need to practice everyday, but I'm lucky if I can draw on paper for an hour a month at best. I got the tablet thinking I could practice more often but it just showed up the problems of using my computer desk for drawing.

Why can't you draw more? You obviously have time to post on here, why can't you use some of that time to dedicate it to drawing?

You don't have to make something nice, you don't even have to use nice paper or tools or anything. Just scribbling down *something* on a scrap piece of paper or doing a 5 minute drawing on your tablet is better than nothing.

The only place where I can draw on paper is in my brother's room, and most of the time he's in there playing Call of Duty. When he's not in there he's usually out drinking late at night for watches something downstairs until about 3 in the morning, and waking up about mid day.

My computer is in the living room, where it's always noisy and where everyone can see me. Coming on here at least looks like a normal computer activity. The only time I can use the tablet is when it's quiet, which is usually at around 3 when no one is in the house.

It's supposed to be a shared room, but he doesn't want me in there when he's awake, even if he's not in there. The room is so small that I have to use his bed as a table. I think the only other room I might be able to draw in is the kitchen, but my dad is in there most of the time, and if I start drawing he'll want me to do it his way.

You could go into the bathroom and pretend you're taking a dump so you can just sit on the floor and doodle in your sketchbook.

I have problems with going to the bathroom even when I need to use the toilet. There's almost always someone in there, the worst being when my brother or one of my sisters go in there to use their phone.

Or hell, go somewhere else.

I don't have anywhere else to go. I don't even leave the house except to walk the dog.

You will have time when you make it. Look at me. I work full time, go to school full time, have two children UNDER the age of 6, work opposite hours as them...get home at midnight...get up the next day at 7am.

If your brother wont share the room then there is clearly a territory issue here. I would get your parents involved... tell them that drawing calms you down and it is better then spending all day playing video games because it actually USES your brain..(not that video games don't..but parents don't much like video games, do they?) Maybe they can help you make an agreement with your brother on sharing time for the room.

As for practicing on the tablet, I hate it when people look over my shoulder when I am drawing, especially on the computer...one person was like "That's not really drawing...that's cheating" CHEATING! they never even tried drawing on a tablet, it is ten times harder then drawing with pencil and paper.

One thing I did when I went on holiday last August was take a small notebook and a pencil wherever I went. Most of the time I couldn't draw anything because of the weather, but I spent at least a few minutes a day drawing something. After the two weeks I had done seven drawings, which was more then I did in the past year at home. One of those drawings I used as a template for my digital one.

They don't know what to do with him. It took them a while to get my brother to let me in the room at night when they found I spent most nights just sitting on the stairs playing the DS until about 1 in the morning. Now at nights he goes down stairs and watches things loudly until about 3 or 4 in the morning sometimes. He also keeps asking them for money, he does have a job but he spends most of what he earns on alcohol. Sometimes the first thing he does when he wakes up is drink alcohol. Once he did say his only goal in life is to drink and play Call of Duty.

My mum thought he would have moved out by now. Last year she threatened to kick him out after catching him with a bong.

I get that problem, but if I'm found drawing they won't think I'm cheating. If it was my dad he would say I'm drawing the wrong things, and will want me to draw Beano style cartoons. My mum doesn't like it at all, saying it's not real work.
