It's certainly the wise thing to do. Still, the history of the Goddess Sword does seem to heavily imply that the Goddess herself was the first and last person to use the damn thing.

So, a thought occurred to me, and I decided to put it here, since it's about old stuff from the NES games that doesn't come up anymore.

What are people's current feelings about the Magical Sword and the Master Sword? Damn skippy if the original story were made today, they'd use the Master Sword, and the circumstances around getting it would be modified to reflect it. Would it be too far out of line to basically say, "Yeah, it probably is the Master Sword, and he probably didn't actually get it the way it does in the NES game"?

I just assumed it was a generic magical sword. For what its' worth, the Smash Bros and Soul Caliber series treat them as separate blades.

I prefer to think that it's just a magical sword that belonged to some dead soldier/Hero (hence where you get it). It could be a lesser anti-evil sword, of course (like the Four Sword or the wannabe Master Swords of the DS games), but since the Silver Arrows are Ganon's bane in LoZ, it need not even be that. Hyrule in the NES games appears to be in a state of decline compared to the rest of the series, so I can totally see the Master Sword being long lost.

I don't dislike your idea, though. Honestly, the first two games are the only ones I wouldn't mind being retconned to fit the advances the series took from ALttP onward. I don't think it's a priority for Nintendo, though.

I prefer to think of LoZ and AoL as "Okay guys! That was the practice round. Next time, we'll introduce the Master Sword instead of the Magic Sword and ALttP and every game after it will be for realzies."

I think it's interesting that both games which feature powering up the sword have the "White Sword" as an intermediate stage. I have a hunch that if they decided to remake LoZ and/or AoL today that they would use the Master Sword and have the "White Sword" just be its less-powerful stage. But do I think they're the same? Nah. Just something they would probably retcon away.

In a way, SS is LoZ remade. And AoL. And ALttP. And LA. And OoT. And well basically the whole series reimagined, let's put it that way.

Cue Aonuma hilariously revealing that all the pre-OOT games are now non-canon.

How nice. Alas, the custerfuck that is OoX/FS ( Capcom ) is still post-OoT. Better be done with it and call all 2D games non-canon.

Or the 2D games are all in their own continuity, like what Ultimate Marvel is to the Marvel comics (or vice versa). Which really seems like the most obvious thing at this point.

Can't please everyone so please no one. I like it actually. They should have done that sooner.

What SS proves to us is that the meaning of "Here lies the first Princess Zelda" in AoL has been retconned.

Originally, it meant SZ was the first Zelda of them all.

Ever since ALTTP, all it means is that SZ is the "first" Zelda of the "new" Hyrule which has North Castle as its capital. That's it. SZ is just the "first" Zelda of the naming tradition introduced by the AoL BS Prince.

And SS proves SZ is no longer the first of them all.
