Penny Arcade seems to have its own hypothesis as to why mowing the lawn gives Link hearts... Let's say, it's rather terminal.

That's fine for getting hearts for killing monsters, but it doesn't explain how you get hearts from chopping grass, as this cartoon tries to do. However, I think they've missed something - grass doesn't have a heart, after all. Minish do, though, and we know there are Minish in the grass because they're hiding the rupees there! Thus, they're clearly Minish hearts.

And according to Wand of Gamelon, heart containers literally are the heart of your enemy, ripped still beating from their body...
