Woo! A day early! Awesomesauce.

Attached File  ss_zelda1.jpg   44.05K   43 downloads

Been playing for just over an hour and I only just got the sword. I was looking around very slowly though. I'm impressed with the sword controls. This is my first time with motionplus though so that may colour my appreciation. Now I have to break off to go to work damn it all!

Anyway, here's a couple of screenshots. They don't spoil the plot or anything, but I'll put them in tags regardless.

Spoiler

By the way, I can't see any options in the game. No way to turn off the giant wii remote hud?

o_0 Luckyyy!

I'm pretty much not gonna be able to touch my copy when I get it, and will have to keep myself from playing it until like...December 8th or 9th. Otherwise I will fail all my classes. u____u BUT THEN when my finals are over I have two separate paintings to do before Christmas and I'll need all the time I can get for those. :deadlink:

Yeah I saw that too. But there's no way to transfer data between two DS consoles, otherwise I'd be all over that like a redead.

Pre-ordered from Amazon, so I'll be getting it a few days after US release, more than likely. A couple buddies and I are doing a launch party thing on Sunday, though, so I'll at least see it the day it drops.

I'm so stoked I can't wait. Sadly no launch parties for me. I live in Modern Warfare territory so I'd be hanging out solo. Oh well, shorter line when I go pick up my preorder I guess.

So having just entered the third dungeon my impressions are this game is a happyish medium between Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. I've avoided all spoilers so I don't know what direction the game will go after the ubiquitous third temple, but so far if you replace TP's overworld with WW's ocean you get a pretty good aproximation of SS.

So, we were able to do our thing early. Played from the beginning through the first dungeon yesterday. Honestly? Kind of a mixed bag. The very beginning was frankly annoying as hell, as it seemed to assume that I've never played a Zelda game before, but that I know my way around Skyloft as if I live there. The sword controls are cool enough, though they're not quite as responsive as I would have liked. And as for the big thing, shaking up the dungeon formula? Probably too early for me to say, but I'm calling BS. I definitely got the same "parts of TWW meet parts of TP" vibe that Vet has, and that's... not really shaking it up all that much. Don't get me wrong, it's still fun, and I'm still looking forward to owning it, but there are some issues. Biggest question mark for me: Why no minimap? Seriously, why?

GOD DAMN THAT FUCKING HARP! :rage:

Edit: because I'm frustrated I'm gonna have a rant. I can't do one of the minigames. Not to spoil it too much but it involves wafting the remote back and forth. This is the only problem I have with motion controls - their margins of error are way off compared to a button press. If something isn't working then you know all you need is a bit of practice. In an archery minigame, if you screw up you know it's because your aim was terrible. Keep at it and you'll conquer it, you only need to consider how accurate you are with a control stick or your timing of pressing a button. And that's the point, you've identified what you need to do to be successful. A button is either pressed in time or it's not. It's a one or a zero. Even a trigger button has a start and an end, the margin of error lies somewhere in between pressing it or not pressing it.

But a waft of the remote can be as long or as short as you can possibly imagine. You can wave it slightly or you can stretch out your arm and move the whole length of your body. you could even throw the damn thing out the window and still it's technically a waft! This makes it very difficult to pinpoint what you need to work on. Am I wafting too much or too little? Even if I managed to discover which, I'm left wondering by how much I need to adjust.

A rhythm game with a button requires timing only. A rhythm game with motion controls requires timing AND motion. FUCK THE FUCKING MOTION.

So far, I'm digging this game. It took what felt like forever to actually descend into "Hyrule" but that's okay.

Playing this game is causing me to reflect on Twilight Princess. There is just something about that damn game that is off to me, and I don't know what it is. The overworld wasn't fun to explore, the temples felt tedious, I wasn't emotionally invested in the story. I tried to be. God honest, I tried, but in the end it just didn't click with me. I still can't figure out why that game just wasn't fun. Here though, everything feels nice. The "overworld" so far is a lot of fun and very fun to explore. Lots of "Oh man, that's pretty. I want to explore that."

One problem I'm having though is actually with the controls as well. I have no complaints about the motion or anything like that, but it seems that I have to re-calibrate the controller on the screen often to get it centered. Does anyone else have that problem?

You've probably figured it out by now, but change your settings to Expert (or something similar) on the Gear screen.

Spoiler regarding one of the first minigames you run into:
Spoiler

Yeah, I'm having to recalibrate a little, but it's no big deal. What is annoying is the calibration of one of the items.
Spoiler

It seems every time I get it out and Z-Target something, the calibration of the item goes completely screwy. It twists upside down, waves around in the ground, completely ignores my motions... I'm better off not Z-Targeting with it.
