Now, I don't know how real this phenomenon is... seeing as I could only find the one case study and the fact that the report raised more questions than answered it... However, I was watching QI last Saturday when Stephen Fry mentioned that Brazil nuts appear to be the only food where you can transmit the allergens sexually.

That is, if I as a male was to eat a Brazil nut and then have unprotected sex with someone with a Brazil nut allergy, my semen will trigger their allergy. Somehow, the allergen manages to survive both digestion and the immune system, and ends up in semen.

Now, as I said, we only have one case study to work on and even then, the case study does raise some interesting questions. How much of it, for example, was psychosomatic? Who knows? All I'm saying is... who wants to do an experiment?

We believe this to be the fi rst case of a sexually transmitted allergic reaction.

On a serious note, we just have to get these boys to ejaculate before eating nuts and ejaculate after eating nuts and see whether the Brazil Nut allergen is found in their semen. That is the question that needs to be answered. A second partner is not necessarily needed... at this point in time.

So you two want scientists to poke and prod your junk to test nut allergies? :(

I'm curious about how quickly the nuts pass through their system in order to create (or avoid) this reaction. Although what are the chances that the guy just ate some nuts, went to the bathroom, (held on tight to his junk like any other normal guy) and simply didn't wash afterward?

Pretty high, but the scientists tested his ejaculate before and after consuming the nuts. The ejaculate before consumption had no effect on the girlfriend. Although, you know... could be psychosomatic.

Actually according to this article, a partner is needed but it's not as sexy as I thought it'd be. In fact it just sounds plain weird... and stupid. I much rather do it the old fashion way. ;d

No, the point I was making is that we don't need a second partner to test whether the allergen ends up in your semen or not. We simply perform a Western blot on your ejaculate to see if the allergen is present. If the allergen is in your "bodily fluids" then obviously someone with a nut allergy is going to react.

But if you want to cause some discomfort...

That way sounds lame too. Why not do it the old fashion way or is that too messy to get accurate results?

The old fashioned way's been done. We want to find out if the protein is actually in the ejaculate, which means putting the stuff through a Western blot.

Well the link I provided seemed to imply that the idea is hogwash anyways. There was an experiment where they went as far to not only test the husbands sperm but the sperm of the couple's sons as well. She got a raection from all of them, even the ones who didn't eat nuts. So either he passed on whatever protein or whatever from the nut onto his own offspring (not sure if that's even possible) or the answer's much simply: she just hated his guts and her kids as well and it took a weird science experiment to make her realize she wanted out of the marriage. She ended up divorcing the guy before they could continue further testing.

Seemed to imply but not necessarily. As I said, we need larger samples. And on second thoughts, I guess we need to find a lot of allergic people too.

They tested her reaction to her sons' sperm? This experiment is sounding worse and worse...
