Being a huge fan of this game, I would say it should definitely be part of your collection. It may be cheaper, if you have a GBA or DS, to get the Four Swords Adventures cartridge that has the updated LttP on it.

It's definitely worth getting. IMO it's the best game of the franchise, but that's just me.

This option. ALttP on the GBA was everything I wanted it to be. xD

I would have thought it was cheaper to get ALttP on the SNES. They don't sell it for much in second-hand stores. But then again, these are retail stores on the high street I'm talking about. Apparently, though, they dumbed down the Ice Palace puzzle in the GBA version. Is this true?

My memory of the original isn't that great, so I cannot confirm or deny that, but I will say this is the first I've heard of that... I'd be surprised if they changed the puzzles to make them easier on the port. =/

Yeah, the last switch puzzle in the Ice Palace was changed to require less monotonous backtracking. I'm in two minds about it. On the one hand, the original was really tedious. On the other hand, I don't like them tampering with stuff when they port them. I'm conflicted. :/

Wow, yeah, a quick search on ebay and LttP is quite pricey!

The VC version I'd say is your best bet. The only thing changed in that is a rename of Chris what's-his-face room. The GBA remake was annoying due to the sword-slashing noise.

And the original ice temple was AWESOME! :victory:

I wasn't messed up by the tedious puzzles in Ice Palace in the old ALttP. If anything, it was the Stalfos enemies before I realized I had to explode them.

Anyway, if you can get ALttP in any way, shape or form, definitely do. You have not played a geniune Zelda game until you played ALttP.

The nostalgic part of me wants to agree with this statement and thunk its fist on the table in resounding agreement.

But realistically, even though I think ALttP was a better game than the majority of the series (taking into account length, initial difficulty, music, story, etc.), I think most any Zelda game that I've played still qualifies as "genuine" in terms of what I think of as "Zeldaness." Adventure of Link is obviously a black sheep as far as the games go. XD Majora's Mask, while one of my favourites, was pretty off-the-wall (because of even more than just being set in a different world) so I'll grant that it might be iffy to some people. No opinion on Wind Waker, as I haven't played it. The two titles for the DS are too heavy on vehicle travel and not heavy enough on exploration, so those are iffy also. Haven't finished Twilight Princess but what I've seen so far has been pretty standard Zelda fare. LA, OoX, TMC, OoT, and LoZ (obviously) are also pretty standard to me. So unfortunately I'mma have to disagree with the implication that the rest of the series is lacking in genuine-ness. And I've probably read way more into that statement than you ever intended to put in it.

But I still recommend buying ALttP because it's my favourite *fangirlish flail*

Three Points:

1. To the OP, if you have the means, just get the Virtual Console version. SNES cart batteries are starting to die off anyway.

2.

You have not played a geniune Zelda game until you played ALttP.

Link to the past is essentially the archetypal Zelda. Every Zelda after it, except maybe Majora's Mask and the two for DS, have been adaptations of Link to the Past. I fear that LttP is a lot like Seinfield: incredibly awesome when it first came out, but no longer feels as great as it used to because it's been imitated so much. I wouldn't be surprised if someone actually found it disappointing these days, sad as the thought may be.

3.

Yeah, the last switch puzzle in the Ice Palace was changed to require less monotonous backtracking.

You mean backtracking from the Misery Mire back to the Ice Palace, right? Sequence Break FTW!

Yeah, the best way to circumvent the Ice Palace switch issue was just to do Misery Mire first and get the Cane of Somaria.

To be honest, the backtracking wasn't that bad. I just replayed aLttP recently and though it took me a few minutes to re-figure it out, it's like a 4 room sequence to get to the switch and back.

I'd say go with the VC version. I've seen carts go for cheap, but given their age there's no guarantee the batteries are going to be decent.

Batteries are replaceable - the authenticity of playing an SNES game on an SNES is not.
