One of the questions from the quiz in Wolf's thread got me thinking.

Is it possible to go through the Shadow Temple in OoT without the Lens of Truth? I mean I imagine it'd be really damn hard and frustrating, but is it actually possible? And has anyone here or anyone you know ever done it? o_0

God, just thinking about trying to beat Bongo Bongo without it is....horrifying. XD

I'm pretty sure it is, thouh I haven't tried. I think speed runners generally skip the Lens of Truth though, let me check... I think generally they even go across the Haunted Wasteland as a child without it.

Here's the speed runner's archive: http://speeddemosarchive.com/ZeldaOcarinaOfTime.html

Hm, and here's the Shadow Temple in particular:

It's possible. It requires memorization of the map, puzzles, and Bongo Bongo's pattern, none of which are TOO difficult.

I've actually done everything outside of the Shadow Temple without using the lens (although I don't remember how I crossed the wasteland.) I also did the room with invisible walls after the boat ride in the Shadow Temple. I haven't gone against Bongo Bongo without the lens, but seeing how his hands and eyes are always in the same place relative to each other and the hands are visible, I'd recon it's possible. Oh, and the N64 IS capable of stereo sound, so if you've got headphones or surround sound this would be a good occasion to use them. The problem is evading the fist attack you can't stun. You wouldn't see it coming without the lens. I imagine the hardest part would be doing the room right before Bongo Bongo. With just the hoverboots it'd be massively annoying, particularly if you want the Gold Skullata. (sp?)

Ohhhh wow, okay. I never even thought to look at speed runs. Thanks Showsni, I've been watching these all afternoon. :P

Some of the things these people come up with are very clever though.. I just watched one on Youtube where the guy did that sheild+bomb thing to the top of the outside of the Spirit Temple and then hookshot his way up to the chest with the gauntlets. o.o; Silly me, it never even crossed my mind that it was possible to get up there.

...Why didn't I ever think to use headphones when I was little and wanted to stay up late playing video games without my parents finding out. o_0

But yeah. I saw for myself how possible it is in that video Showsni posted and all the other ones I watched on Youtube. These speed runner guys are nuts. How in the world they can manage to go through the Haunted Wasteland without the Lens and do it BACKWARDS is beyond me. XD

I actually never used the lens to beat Bongo Bongo, after seeing him for the first time. Just aim for the dead center between his hands.

I didn't use Lens for him.. Its not too terribly difficult.

edit:
Looks like Elven didn't use it either :D

Bongo Bongo is actually one of the easiest parts of the temple to do without the Lens. I've done it before (and the Haunted Wasteland, but not on the same file); the worst part is in one of the larger rooms, where there's an invisible moving platform which is pretty much unpredictable, but otherwise the level is pretty easy as long as you know it nerdishly well.
