It's pretty self explanatory...but I guess what I mean by "knowing" a language, I mean by reading/writing/speaking. However, if you read/write without knowing what the hell is being read/written, I guess that qualifies too! Just specify~

......yeah I know some will say they can read Spanish/French and such as the letters are pretty much the same, if you say that, then put a giant ;d next to the text for me. XD

For me; English, Japanese, Urdu (XD)
Read/Write But have no idea what it means: Arabic

Well, I only really know English. I was taught a couple years of Spanish, but the area of my brain it once occupied has mostly been reallocated to other things. I never used it, so I forgot! I work with a couple Spanish-speaking people now, and I can still catch bits and pieces of their conversations. Faaaar from fluent.

I grew up hearing a little bit of Swedish, since my family immigrated here recently compared to most others (my grandfather was fluent in Swedish). I've made online efforts to study it in my free time, but haven't been keeping up with it lately. Shame, shame. But I was picking it up pretty quick when actually paying attention.

Likewise, German seems interesting and I wouldn't mind studying it. Probably because Swedish is so similar.

I'm only fluent in English. ;_;

I took Spanish in high school and have forgotten most of what I learned, and I took French in college (and retain more of that). I'm not fluent but I can usually hold basic conversations.

I've picked up a tiny amount of Japanese from watching anime over the years... XD

....Yeah...we English speakers tend to be lazy and never learn another language.

As that I live in THAT part of Georgia, knowing at least SOME Spanish is almost a survival skill. I can usually understand when a native speaker is trying to talk to me, but native-native conversations are too fast for me to pick up on, and my active vocabulary is too limited for me to do anything but the most basic tasks.

I read and write Latin rather well, though. It's a dead language, so no speaking. I think I spent my entire senior year in high school translating either Caesar's conquest of Gaul, or Virgil's Aeneid.

(The latter was quite annoying because it was poetry; "Diphthong or sponde, sir? WTF is a diphthong?")

Also, a few years ago I tried to invent my own language -similar to Esperanto- specifically designed to be easy to learn, but I couldn't find the time to work on it. I've picked up this project several times, but never finished it. Now that we've got this nice S&H forum, I might start a thread on it and see what you guys make of it.

EDIT: Watching subbed anime has gotten my Japanese to the point where it no longer sounds like gibberish. At this rate I'll be fluent in....oh...about 200 years.

My first language is English, and Im actually quite well in speaking German. I took 4 years of it in school and have been around quite a few German People to help improve both my accent and delivery. German is a really cool language but i wish i knew Italien or Greek, they are both such beautiful languages.

My French teacher used to make me read aloud in class because my accent was better than the other students'.. it was a compliment, sure, but it didn't allow me much ability to translate what I was reading, because I was worried about pronouncing it well. XD

I have trouble with a few French sounds, usually 'r' in particular (the word "parler" gives me much more trouble than you'd think XD), but I do pretty well. Much better than my classmates did...

The teacher came in once and addressed one of them with, "Bonjour! Comment allez-vous?"

The student replied (and I'm spelling this roughly phonetically), "Jay map ell Kenya!"

I know English (obviously) and French as well. I’m currently taking Grade 9 Academic French at school and am probably taking it next year as well. My second most fluent language is definitely Cantonese; even though I go to Chinese school, I learn most of it from watching TVB's Journey to the West. Pretty sweet show. ^.^

I can’t understand much in Mandarin though. :(

I took 4 years of German in my highschool. I refused to take Spanish as the only classmates were gangsters who were taking it for an easy language cred. So yeah....Spriechen sie deutsch?

Maybe I should make a "What nationality are you?" thread, too!

As mentioned before in this thread, I do realize that English certainly is the most convenient, as most strive to learn it as the basis of communication with one another these days~ making less motivation for the English speaking to learn other languages, but more motivation for non-English speakers to learn English~

Tis goodstuff, this silly language. XD

I'm quite fluent in English. Oh, and American too.
I'm also a French student right now, though I'd rather be taking latin.

Je voudrais aimer une omlette au fromage. Et toi?

Besides English, I can perfectly understand Tagalog, the Filipino language....but I can't speak a lick of it. At all. I'm not sure how that works out, but there ya go. Took three years of Spanish and high school and I canf ake it, but I can't carry conversations at all, though I can order food and ask simple questions like directions and whatnot.

So, yeah, not much going on here.

Semi-fluent in German, though I haven't taken a class in three years and it's fading horrifically fast.

I took two quarters of Russian this year, but I had to drop it this last quarter. I can sound out most words and pick up on the grammar of sentences, but my vocabulary is awful. The learning curve for Russian is pretty steep--it's an entirely different grammar than German or English.

My first language is English. I've taken 2 1/2 years of Spanish, and can read it, but am not great at listening/speaking to it. I've taken a few American Sign Language classes, but haven't used it for awhile, so I'm a bit rusty on it.

I can understand bits of French.

Well, I got A* at French and German GCSE... But most of that I've probably forgotten. What little I knew of tenses is pretty much gone. (Ich heisse Nicolai Antonescu. Ich habe angst von dem Telefon.)

But the language I know best is English, which I'm practically fluent in. Certainly enough to get by, anyway.

Diphthong or sponde, sir? WTF is a diphthong?

Why, it's when one vowel turns into another one within a single syllable, of course. I'd give an example, but diphthongs are one of the things that define accents.
