This is probably old news, and some of my premises might be false, but I thought I'd throw this out there.

1. The trophy of Toon Link in Super Smash Bros. Brawl (SSBB) describes him as being 12 years old.
2. Toon Link is the Link from the Windwaker (WW).
3. WW Link is the same age as the legendary hero in WW's backstory.
4. WW takes place in the Adult Link timeline. Corollary: The legendary hero was Adult Link.
Conclusion: If the SSBB trophy was accurate, then Adult Link was 12 years old.

Faulty logic is faulty. Nothing states for fact that TWW Link and Adult OOT Link were the same age, only that TWW Link was the same age that Link started his journey. Therefore, he's merely the same age as the Hero of Time at the very beginning of his adventure.

On the other hand, there is further proof that TWW Link is at least as old as Adult Link: The Master Sword didn't age him, and if he were any younger than Adult Link, it would have.

Though, the Master Sword was depowered when he first got it.

Besides, the age up in OoT is really just a convenient plot device; we shouldn't expect them to re-use it. Like the triforce splitting.

Also, TWW Link is 12 whilst young Link in OoT is usually said to be younger (anywhere from 7-10); it looks like the memories of how old Link was on Outset Island have been distorted over time.

There's no way he could only be 7-8 in OoT, as he's clearly not 14-15 as Adult Link. That was a pre-release comment, and we know how these things change from stuff that's said before release... 9-12 is at least possible. 9 as the minimum because I think another interview said it was around that, and because it would make Adult Link 16, like AoL and TP Link. 12 fits with TWW, and at least 10-12 makes it more likely for him to pass as an adult. Being the same as TWW's Link is unnecessary, as legends can be inaccurate, and it's more of a generic coming of age ceremony. It's like how Christians come up with an estimation of Jesus' birthday, but it's most likely not accurate.

I can't seriously believe I'm having a discussion over the precise age of a character in a video game. I'm not sure if this means I shouldn't be theorising, or if I just need to stick to things with actual meaning.

I actually recall reading on the Daizenshuu EX Dragon Ball forum that the Japanese consider people to be adults once they become 15. I can't confirm that though, so I'll just ask MPS if that is true or false.

Edit: I have spoken with MPS and he has confirmed that the Japanese believe that a person is an adult once they become 15.

Indeed they do. When it comes to the law, it can be more complicated, as in some areas, age restrictions are loser than the West, and in some areas even more strict, but as far as social climate, yea, you're acknowledged as "adult enough" at 15.

Considering ANIMU, Adult Link could very easily be 15.

TWW Link isn't the Hero of Time, and thus isn't necessarily bound by any requirements OOT Link had to go through.

I'd say OOT Link is about 12 at the beginning because TWW's Link was 12. Same with all the child Links (FS games, OOX, TWW/PH, ST).
All the others were between 14 (LOZ's Link's implied age with AOL two years later) and 18 or 20.

I've always thought that Link is not THAT young in TWW. It's just aesthetics, he could just be 16. The children of the game are all much smaller than Link (and I know, the adults much taller), and anyway, from the point of view of TWW people, the Hero of Time began his adventure at 16 (or so), when he appeared as from nowhere.

We don't know how much of that is true. Zelda could've informed the people of the true story as a legend, and then things kinda fell to shit with the Flooding and stuff, so the Outset Island knows "Uh...well a young boy, barely a man, came through with a holy sword and killed the demon king, Ganon, then he rode into like...time. On a horse."

Pretty sure OoT link was transported seven years in time to forfill his destiny as the Hero of Time, WW Link is the Hero of Winds with a different destiny. HoT Saves Hyrule, HoW destroys it. I'm pretty sure the age thing is tied to the hero of time only.

Also I've always considered Young Link as 11, a typical age for a child hero and also marks the first step towards adulthood. And that would make Adult Link 18, which is considered an age of becoming an adult. Mostly makes sense.

Yes but 12 year olds don't tend to be as tall as adults, Link is also roughly the same age as Zelda. So Shiek, is 12?

I never said Adult OOT Link was twelve. Infact, I shot down that very same notion above. I'm only saying TWW Link is twelve, probably to mirror the age of OOT Link at the time he started his journey.

I don't see any reason to believe that TWW Link is a young adult. Aside from the height issue that MPS mentioned, the characters in TWW clearly treat Link like a child, the same way that OoT's characters treated Young Link.

If there is one single thing I find weird about the situation, it's that the Master Sword seems to have mysteriously shortened in length since it was wielded by the Hero of Time...

Well, it WAS drained of it's power. And since it displays a weird quasi-sentience, it may have stayed short to keep from being difficult or unwieldy for it's new master.
