In ALttP, the backstory says that the Sages forgot where the Master Sword was located, and couldn't find it or anyone to wield it. Then in the game itself, Link finds it and it is at full power. TWW established that two sages need to be praying for the sword to keep its power, but if the Sages forgot where it was, doesn't that imply that the sages that were supposed to be praying for it weren't? Then how did it keep its power without the prayers of the sages? Couldn't one of the Sages ask his buddy in the Earth Temple, "Hey, that sword you're supposed to be praying for, where is it again?"

They didn't necessarily have to know where it was to be powering it up. We just saw it happen in TWW because Link had it on him at the time. They continued to power it no matter how far away it was, so it's totally possible that keeping it fueled up doesn't require one to know where it is.

I think it's a classic example of something that was applied retroactively. I doubt they had planned ahead every last detail of the Master Sword by the third game in the series, let alone the first Zelda game to SHOW the Master Sword; it's way too early to assume otherwise. That thing has changed powers, locations, and prerequisites from game to game, with TWW finally letting us know that...suprise! This thing has an expiration date w/o the sages; here, it was mostly used as a plot device anyway. ALttP was the MS's intro story and of course every detail wouldn't be planned ahead for the future.
I say, this is something TWW introduced as a plot device that we can assume retconned the lack of prayer going on. Otherwise, you're probably right, but why make more problems for yourself? By default, if a new game creates an impossibility within an older game, the new game replaces the 'facts' of the old game. Just take TWW's word for it that there were two dudes praying for this hunk of metal, somewhere off in the distance.

Who says the Master Sword always needs Sages to be powered up? The only time this is explicitly shown to be the case is post-flooding.
It could be because the Master Sword used all of it's power stopping time or something. Or maybe it's just heartbroken that it's soulmate (the hero) didn't come to it's side.
