I remember in TWW he had a plan to create new land. What was involved in making the new land, though?

I remember it being something like he was trying to pull all the islands together to make a new land. Am I right?

I can't find the quote anywhere in text dumps or anything like that. I've heard people referring to it a lot but I haven't seen it in a while and can't find it.

Sorry if I put this in the wrong place.

The Deku Tree said that trees had great power and could gradually expand land. Fans have speculated that he hoped soil would get pulled up from the ocean or something, but nobody really knows.

And yes, the Deku Tree wanted to unite the islands so that the people could hold hands in peace or something like that.

I think part of the plan was to send the Koroks out to plant trees and create new forests. When that happened, somehow they would join. If you remember after the end of the second dungeon, most of the Koroks left with seeds all over the Great Sea.

Every year after the Koroks perform this
ceremony, they fly off to the distant
islands on the sea and plant my seeds
in the hopes that new forests will grow.

Forests hold great power--they can change
one tiny island into a much larger island.
Soon, a day will come when all the islands
are one, connected by earth and grove.

And the people who live on that great
island will be able to join hands and,
together, create a better world.

Such is my dream.

...But the one you are chasing is trying
to prevent that dream from ever coming
to pass.

Maybe dead trees could silt up a river or lake, but they're not going to fill in the sea any time soon, you crazy old tree.

I like to think the answer is magic.

You're thinking literally. He was being abstract. Unite the islands, as in, have the people join together in embracing peace and therefore prosper.

I mean, the literal translation? That's insane. We know what trees are. They don't do that. Aonuma had to be taking heavy doses of narcotics if he meant that.

Like I said, it's probably related to spreading forests across the Great Sea. Maybe they didn't have to be everywhere, but just key parts of the world.

Well yes, but:

Forests hold great power--they can change
one tiny island into a much larger island.

Doesn't seem like a metaphor/symbolism for unity.

These could be giant sponge trees and soak up the entire ocean

I don't think he wanted to bring Hyrule back; he probably already knew it was cursed and didn't want Ganondorf causing havoc again.

I used to think he was being literal.

Now I think he was probably being metaphorical by bringing hope and prosperity to the islands by planting trees as a gesture of good faith. In TWW, the islands are pretty barren. Just a bunch of rocks jutting of the ocean with very little plant life, if any at all, growing on them. Planting more trees will increase prosperity. Trees equal more resources such as wood, paper, fruit, ect. The islands probably won't grow any larger and besides taht's not how islands grow (volacnic activity does that). They may become greener though.

Good luck trying to get past all of those Octopi in the Great Sea.

Huh. That could 'splain why Octoroks are sometimes land-dwelling creatures. Obviously, WW is one of the first games on the timeline.

No, no, you all got it wrong.

The Great Flood wasn't caused by the Goddesses. It was caused by Global Warming and the Deku Tree's idea was to suck the carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere to help lower global temperatures and hence aid in the formation of ice caps that would lock water away. Don't you see? The Wind Waker has subtle environmental issues inserted into the plot.

The impression I got was that the trees would suck up water, and slowly lower the sea levels, thus reclaiming the land. So my vote is for the sponge theory. I don't think he wanted to bring back Hyrule though... I think he just wanted to make more land available, 'cuz lets face it, even with magic, there's a limit to how much water a tree could suck up <_<

I read something interesting in New Scientist today.

Some Russian scientists from the St. Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute in Russia say that forests create wind that pumps moisture across continents. (Now that I think about it, it's rather strange for nuclear physicists to be commenting on such an issue). They argue that the evaporation from coastal forests creates an area of pressure that is lower than that over oceans, thus sucking moisture inland to create more rain inland.

http://www.newscient...-worldwide.html

Although, to tell you the truth, I think it'd take a great feat of mental gymnastics to use that as a justification for the Great Deku Tree's actions.

The Great Deku Tree is all about nuclear physics.
