The Plan for rebuilding the site

Anyway, here is what is lost, and what is backed up.
Backed up:
- Almost the entire site, as of 2 months ago
- Image gallery, as of March
- Databases: I have a two-week old backup of one database which has the mailbag, updates, links, encyclopedia, and bestiary. I have a backup of the redesigned encyclopedia database, which I've been working on in secret, and most of the code that goes along with it.
Not backed up:
- Fan art gallery (the database and images, at any rate)
- Fan fic section (as far as I know)
- Zelda news is only backed up from November 2003, but I expect that Google has the news posts cached. I plan to redesign this anyway, using a database instead of Newspro.
What I plan to do:
I'm not going to simply reupload everything and try to get things running as quickly as possible. Even if I wanted to, I'm at home and I have dialup. I'm not upload 800MB of stuff over dialup. Besides, Khuffie might be able to restore some data off of the original hard drives.
What I DO plan to do is take this opportunity to improve some things. I plan to have a single login system for everything (or try to, anyway). I'm going to redesign the encyclopedia (which is already almost complete, actually) and have a members area (a plan which is also fairly advanced, though put back a few days thanks to lost code). I'll also merge the fan art gallery and image gallery into one.
How long will this take? Oh, I'd say a month or so. In the meantime, I'll see if I can reupload small portions of the site at a time. Don't expect everything to go up at once.

Joey, it will be exactly the same except you can log in and do cool stuff, like write encyclopedia entries and post your theories.

actually, the fanart gallery quite likely contributed greatly to the crashing of the disks- we upload and download vastly more than any other section, via greater submission frequency and viewing frequency.
it might stand to reason then to isolate the fanart gallery onto a different serverbox, in case we cause another crash. let me see... if i'm guessing right, (i doubt it, but wtf) it might cost... $700 to rig up a seperate 'box on the outset, and then an additional $200 when we consume the space on the drive. so... would it be possible to set up a system where high-submission artists can donate money, to help buy space that they otherwise wouldn't have? ie, drop the space newbies get, by say half, but add space to a account partition depending on the donation. it'd kinda suck, but crashing everything (again) would be quite shameful.
on a side note, i'm not sure combining the fanart gallery and image gallery would be a good idea davogones... they're very different in purpose and design, on a fundamental level.

The fan art and image galleries are different in purpose, yes, but exactly the same in design. They both use Coppermine. Coppermine has a built in user gallery, which the fan art gallery makes use of exclusively. The image gallery makes use of all features other than the user gallery. So go figure. The only reason we didn't combine them in the first place was because I had stupid technical reasons concerning paths to images, references to which I didn't want to change.

for the offhand chance that you forgot you had a site before you merged with Khuffie's Site....
Edit: not sure if that's the URL, came across the Hyrule Geography article while Google searching... the one with the .net affix is there though

Google still has many portions of the site... in its CACHE. All the site content that I listed above will go back up... eventually. Khuffie and I are redoing the site backend and it will take a while.

Khuffie must have told you that. Bad Khuffie, bad!

Lies of the infidel! I never did such a thing! Never really talked to Masamune till after he got hosted =P
Oh and pinning this topic? Prolly useful. You may smite me if its not. (davogones, not you others =P)
Oh, we should probably take this time to see if there's anything else you'd like to see, in terms of features, content, ideas so on. Not promising anything will be done (well not initially at least), but it'd still be good

And no, we're not doing zelda porn
