The first sight of the Hylian language was in A Link to the Past. It seems to be the same kind of Hylian that appears on some art for Link's Awakening, and it seems to be in the Spirit Temple in Ocarina of Time.

In ALttP, Hylian appears on the Master Sword's pedistal and on stones across Hyrule.

Here is OoT Hylian, and it also appears in MM.

No official translation has ever been released for this Hylian.

This is the Hylian that appears in TWW and in some places in TP.

It appears on what seems to be ancient graves in TP.

Here is TP Hylian.

Is TWW Hylian just a retcon of OoT Hylian? After all, OoT Hylian was never actually given an official translation. Since TP is in the child timeline and TWW is in the adult timeline, is it possible that both timelines eventually started speaking the same language? Did Ganondorf's rule of Hyrule really affect the progress of the Hylian language that much, or was it inevitable in both timelines that they woud speak the same form of Hylian? Was TWW Hylian around before OoT, and it just wasn't as common until after the timeline split?

In ALttP the Hylian was a bunch of hieroglyphs put together. It's nothing like OoT Gerudo Hylian.

The wooden archway leading into ALttP's Kakariko has symbols resembling the OoT Hylian (and I suppose also the sign above the bar's door)

I don't think that it should matter to timeline, really. It gets too complicated if we try to do that. I mean, in PH they could have the Hylian from OoT and we know it's after TWW so bleh.

Is TWW Hylian just a retcon of OoT Hylian?

Both OoT and TWW Hylian appear in varying parts of TP, or, at least, OoT Hylian appeared in early versions. I'd say TP Hylian is a more likely retcon of OoT Hylian, and TWW Hylian is another dialect of the same language.

My hunch is that there's really been no emphasis on making a real language out of anything until Wind Waker, when it became actually integral to the script. So as far as I'm concerned, everything prior to that probably doesn't count outside of "<insert generic text here>".

I'm with TML here. Everything pre-OOT is Just babbling, and even THEN the languages are inconsistent with each other. There's no timeline basis, it's just a gimmick.

I wonder, do you think that the scroll from the deceased king in TAoL was written in some kind of Hylian?

TP Hylian reminds me of ALttP Hylian. At least the Hylian in that picture Vertiboy provided with the Windfish. TWW Hylian reminds me of OoT Hylian.
