I dared to watch the premiere of One Piece on the Foxbox.

They called Zoro... *shudder* ...Zolo.

R to L isn't exactly a big deal, you know... >.>

Though don't fret - the DVD's of One Piece will be perfectly fine - besides, at least they kept the original song intead of writing a new one, though obviously it's not a translation.

R to L is actually a very natural change. The Japanese don't have Ls, if you look very carefully. If they get an L, they usually pronounce it as an R, unless they learnt how to pronounce it themselves.

It's a bit like how some people can't pronounce "th" because they have nothing like it in their language. They just pronounce it "t".

Which is exactly how FuriKuri became Fooly Cooly.

Never seen One Peice, and I hate 4kids.

What's really weird is that they continued to call it Furi Kuri in the series. The title was sometimes referred to as "Fooly Cooly" but I don't recall that being in the dub.

...Oh wait, there was those hilarious manga scenes.

However Megaman is one such example where 4Kids CANNOT be forgiven for...

The voices beyond horrible....butchered editting everywhere and over 1/3rd of the series was cut out of the show.

If we should be mad at 4Kids is one thing: Everything. Let Cartoon Network do the translating, please.

Yes, nevermind that they're an important dubbing company no matter how bad the jobs may be, and that they've lately gotten much better.

Or maybe that's just Pokemon. I still find it ironic people curse 4Kids for changing Pokemon when it is the least edited anime on television. They change names and background music, and ground Team Rocket's references to something people on this side of the Pacific will get, but that's about it. Yell at them for any other anime you want - just not about this one.

I think what they did to Yu-Gi-Oh was unforgiveable, probably one of the reasons I grew out of it.

But you're right, 4Kids has gotten better. Still pretty crappy when stacked up against other dub companies (hell, pretty much all of them) but at least they're improving, even if it's only a little bit at a time.

Speaking of which, does anybody else think FUNImation has improved quite a lot? The latter dubs for DB/Z/GT were fairly good, and the YYH dub is pretty impressive. Not to mention I'm anxious to hear Funi's dub for Full Metal Alchemist.

Although what is impressive is Cartoon Networks job....I never expected them to do such good jobs all-round.

...but CN, or rather, Time Warner, isn't actually doing anything besides buying the airing rights. The shows themselves are still dubbed by companies like Ocean and whatnot. Now, obviously, snapping up the airing rights and putting them on TV, mostly on Cartoon Network though occasionally on Kids WB, is what you should be thankful for.

But yeah, that's the reason why the quality changes - the different companies do it.

Which is why Amuro's dubbed voice in Zeta is going to be different from his dub voice in MSG. :deadlink:

it would seem that 4kids has learned its lesson about changing names from the ones used in shonen jump (if theyre going to call it shonen jump's), they even left in zo(l)ro's first name of roronoa! even i have a tough time saying that one... unless i think of it as roro no azoro..
anyway, i'm hella impressed. the theme song is cool, the voices are good, the plot's kept... all but that 'cursed fruit' thing (and what were we really expecting?) it's fine. of course theyre bound to cut out some gore.. but at least they can have guns on tv now.

Any idea on who does Amuro's voice in Zeta? All I know about the Ztea dub is that it's being done by a different company.

I've heard that 4Kids has gotten better lately, but my local staations canceled FoxBox (just in time for the new saeson! :deadlink: ) and I don't watch Kids WB, so I don't know what my opinion is one their "revolution."

Amuro will be voiced by the guy who played "Young Domon" in G Gundam. Not much to work on, in other words...

Really? Well, he wasn't that bad. Still fairly weird though. I think Quatre was the better voice for a character like Amuro, but since he is older in Zeta...

Still, it's irritating. I mean, this dubbing company did a good job with G Gundam and was able to convey SEED's mediocrity well enough, but still...

why can't everyone just speak one language so no one will have to dub anything and storylines won't be messed up?

As far as I know, 4Kids is going back and totally redubbing everything from episode 1 to now. The first six episodes will be released on DVD, with both subs and uncut dubs, late October.

I find it impossible to believe that series 1 will ever be dubbed. Not only is it very violent (removing all possibility of an air time, and making an edited version unfeasible), but there's no advertising there. With series 2, Konami can make money off little kids who rush to the nearby stores to buy a Dark Magician or something. Series 1 has little regarding the card game, and what is there doesn't remotely resemble what series 2 gives.

After this, I'm almost afraid to watch what happens to Tokyo Mew Mew... (although, I have to admit, 4Kids IS getting better..)
